There are many interview questions and answers, but the top, most important interview questions are in a league of their own. How you answer these questions really matters. These questions are designed to be specific to individuals.

The issue here is that while people who are similarly qualified may give similar answers to standard questions, their answers on a personal level will naturally be different. This means you need to understand the questions, think about your answers, and provide a meaningful, useful answer for your interviewers.

Question: Why do you want this job?

This is a standard question, and very relevant to employers. The answer will tell the interviewers a lot about you. A “standard answer”, saying what everyone else says, isn’t much use, either, because a better answer will be far more competitive.

Sample answer: I see this job as a very useful, productive step on my career path. It’s a very good job, with a lot of opportunities for career development. I can gain a lot of useful practical experience which fits in well with my college studies, as well.

Reason for answer: This answer puts the job applicant’s motives for wanting the job in clear focus. This is obviously an applicant who’s applying with credible reasons for wanting the job.

Question: Where do you expect to be in five years, if you get this job?

Sample answer: Hopefully, I’ll have gained the skills, knowledge, and experience for a higher position.  I’m hoping to progress up the career ladder in this job, developing my career credentials.

Reason for answer: The applicant is looking ahead, and explaining their future career track, which involves working with the employer. This means the applicant sees the job as a part of their progression to a future role, not “just a job”.

Question: Why should we hire you?

Sample answer: I think I can bring a lot of proven skills and expertise to this job. I’ve achieved high productivity in my current work, and I’ve received excellent performance reviews. I believe I have a very good track record in sales, exceeding my sales targets every month for the last 3 years.

Reason for answer: As you can see, this is a very subjective individual answer to the question. The applicant is making it clear that they have a very strong claim to the job. The applicant is emphasizing their strong record of performance and value to the employer, and backing up their statement with documented evidence of the value of their work.

Considering your answers

Your job interview answers to these questions need to be clear and based on facts. It’s critically important that you provide your interviewers with the best, most positive statements in response to these questions. Stick to facts; state your case well and with authority. You can prove you’re the right person for the job.
